Description:
When HMAS Sydney defeated SMS Emden – a ‘lone wolf’ that had terrorised Allied shipping in the Indian Ocean in the early days of WWI – she registered Australia’s first major naval victory.
Of the 6,429 Mexican Silver Dollars found aboard the German vessel after the Battle of the Cocos, 1,000 were used to create the Sydney-Emden Medal. Conferred upon those aboard the Sydney, this rare, famous medal is valued at around A$3,000 today. Set in an informative booklet detailing the battle, this full-size, detailed Sydney-Emden Medal replica gives everyone the chance to honour a major milestone in Australian military history.
